Bernau - Town defensive fortifications
|
Dating from the 14th century and consisting of a three-part rampart and moat system with a fortification wall built from glacial boulders. The city wall was for the protection the towns’ centre and had an original length of 1496 meters. It had an original height of between eight to ten meters and incorporated 42 defensive look out houses, two round towers and three town gates. Remains of the look out houses, the powder tower and the hunger tower are still to be seen.

The executioners house in Bernau
|
The house is about 250 years old and was once the residence of the towns’ executioner. Today it belongs to the towns’ museum and exhibits some of the tools of the former occupants’ trade including the executioners’ sword from the 16th century and the “stone of disgrace” for bickering and argumentative women.

Stone Gate and Hunger Tower
|
Of the three original town gates there remains only the “Steintor” Stone Gate intact at the eastern end of the Berliner Strasse. The gate is connected to the Hunger Tower by two of the fortifications passageways. The town Museum has kept many treasures there from the past since 1882. The treasures include a valuable armoury collection and examples of old hand crafts as well as many documents from the towns’ history. Since 1994 it is possible to ascend the Hunger Tower from where there is an excellent view of the town.

St. Marien Church
|
This late Gothic nave church ordained in 1519 has works of art of inestimable value on its walls, for example, a rare winged altar with panel motives from the school of Lukas Cranach the elder and also a central crucifixion group.

Cantor house
|
The oldest existing residential house of the town, which was built in 1582/83, may be seen in the Tuchmacherstraße, today it provides accommodation for the music school.

Wolf-Kahlen-Museum
|
This private art museum is dedicated to the media arts and was joint founded by Wolf Kahlen in the 1960’s and 70’s.

Herz Jesu Church
|
The single nave church was built in 1908 in the style of the North German red brick Gothic and was the realisation of a dream for the young priest Ulitzka.

Sankt Georgen Hospital
|
A foundation that still exists today is the wealthy Cloth Makers Guild that dates back to 1328. The building was burned down by the Hussites (Wycliffites) and was then rebuilt in the 15th century.

Ladeburg
|
In Ladeburg there are some valuable historical buildings and monuments such as the former Bonds and Levies House, the “double drawing room house” and a 13th century Church that is built from glacial boulders.

The Hoffnungstaler Sanatorium in Lobetal
|
Founded in 1905 by Pastor Friedrich von Bodelschwingh is the largest social institution in the Brandenburg region. In Lobetal there are homes available for care and support for the elderly, mentally and psychologically handicapped and people prone to attacks or with addiction problems, there are also workshops, child day care centres, the Lobetal Evangelic diaconal education and training centres.
